Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease characterised by hyperglycaemia due to peripheral insulin resistance and/or insulin deficiency. This may be due to a decline in viable pancreatic β-cells number or β-cell dysfunction leading to impaired nutrient-induced insulin secretion.
